It’s Filipino American History Month!

October is a great time to read about Filipinos in the United States and Filipino Americans, including in Alaska. I have a lot of information I want to share, so please excuse my long list of links and articles!

See my previous post about Thelma Garcia Buchholt, an important Alaskan legislator and author:

This month, I saw an article in the Senior Voice by Shayne Nuesca that had some great information about more recent history of Filipinos in Alaska:

Longlisted for the National Book Award, Everything We Never Had, Author of Parton Saints of Nothing Randy Ribay, Award sticker for Youth Literature Award Winner Asian-Pacific American Librarians Association, illustration of male teen, father, and grandfather walking a dog

My favorite YA novel by a Filipino American author is Everything We Never Had by Randy Ribay. He uses multiple points of view to tell the story about a Filipino American family and their father-son relationships over four generations. Along the way, I also learned about how Filipinos participated in the farm labor movement.
