National Poetry Month

graffiti with word "POETRY" courtesy of Stencil

April is National Poetry Month! Although I’m not a poet, I believe that poetry is important in our lives. Poetry has touched my soul through the years, from Shakespeare’s sonnets to John Keats’ “Ode on a Grecian Urn” to current contemporary poets. My all-time favorite poem is Langston Hughes’ “Mother to Son”—you can find the full poem here:

Maybe this is too much for strict traditionalists, but I consider song lyrics to be poetry, too. Read the lyrics to (or even better, watch or listen to) “Thunder Road” by Bruce Springsteen

and tell me that isn’t great poetry! Maybe your favorite songs are how you appreciate poetry—that works for me. If it’s written in lines and focuses on making every word count, it’s poetry in my book. Enjoy!
