Every year, back to school season hits me with nostalgia. I loved school as a kid, and I enjoyed teaching for twenty years. While I’m glad I don’t have lesson plans and an early start in the mornings, I do miss spending time with teens. One way I’ve filled that gap is by writing with them.
Before Covid times, I helped run a teen writing club at my local library. During Covid, I wrote a booklet of writing tips for teens. You can download a free copy on my website’s books page here:
Nowadays, I supply weekly writing prompts for an Instagram account of a library’s teen program. You can see them on my stories at my Instagram page:
Or directly on the Teen Underground page at:
And this fall, I am helping the Anchorage Public Library’s teen program by offering two writing workshops in conjunction with their zine project. Want to submit something for their “My Alaska” zine? Or just want to write with other teens? Attend the September 7 or October 12 teen writing workshop (or both dates)! Stop by between 3:00 and 5:00 pm at the Loussac Library’s Teen Underground room for brainstorming ideas, revision tips, and more.
Whether you’re a teen, or just remembering the good parts of back to school, I wish you a good autumn and great school year!
