My Watchword for 2026: Joy

I usually choose a watchword of the year to set my intention for the next twelve months. Last year’s word was Perseverance. (See https://www.lynnlovegreen.com/post/2025-watchword-perseverance.) My word for 2026 is Joy.
I choose Joy to remind myself to find joy in people, activities, and the world around me. I hope to appreciate and enjoy the big and little things in life, whether it’s a cup of tea, a great book, a lovely sunset, or time with my loved ones.
Here are some quotes that I’ve been thinking about as I focus on joy:

Amy Leigh Mercee said, “Live joy. Be kind. Love unconditionally.” That sounds like a great way to be in the world. Joy can also help me become my best self.

We all need a sense of belonging and goodwill. As Jonathan Lockwood Huie said, “Joy blooms where hearts and minds are open.” This coming year, I hope to keep an open heart and mind to learn from those around me and help build community.

Here’s another reason for my watchword of 2026--there are many people in the world who are working to tear down our democracy and our fundamental rights. Personally, I am most concerned about our freedoms of speech and expression, which is why I’m involved in Authors Against Book Bans (https://www.authorsagainstbookbans.com) and other groups. While we act to keep our rights, we must not let the others win by stealing our joy in life. As Audre Lorde said, “Joy is an act of resistance.”
Whatever reason you might seek joy (or choose your own word of 2026), I wish you joy, love, and the best year ever. Happy 2026!
