Most of my conferences are local. I love attending the Kachemak Bay Writers Conference in Homer. I enjoy volunteering and seeing the Annual Conference for Writers and Illustrators in Anchorage, where the Alaska Writers Guild, AKRWA (Alaska chapter of Romance Writers of America), and SCBWI-AK (Alaska chapter of the Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) co-host every year. But this is a big year for me--it was my first time at the national RWA (Romance Writers of America) Conference. This year, it was in Anaheim.
Romance writers are kind and friendly people, so I knew I'd have a good time. I had many thoughtful conversations with fellow writers. And the sessions were amazing. Whether listening to authors tell about their writing journeys, or participating in writing craft or business workshops, there were always inspirational and helpful things to learn.
A few of my favorites: Mel Walker's keynote, the Brainstorming Party with Maggie K. Black, the Meet Cute workshop with Candie Moonshower, and the Evening with Susanna Hoffs (The Bangles singer and new author!).
Whether you're a writer or you have another passion or hobby, I encourage you to try a national conference at least once in your life. It will give you knowledge and memories to carry with you for a long time. I know I'm glad I attended RWA's conference. Thanks to all the folks who organized such a great event!
