August is State Fair time here. In Southcentral Alaska, we have ours in Palmer, where the Matanuska Colony was founded in the 1930s and many family farms are still in the area.

We have rides, carnival booths, many vendors selling their wares, and wonderful food. My favorite is the salmon quesadilla. There is also a huge barn with livestock and giant vegetables. The long summer days help us grow cabbages and pumpkins well into the hundred-pound range.

Plus, the fair gardeners have beautiful displays. This year, the big feature is the "unkindness of ravens" where a group of ravens are caught stealing stars from the train. Here are a few photos for you. Enjoy your state fair, or your other end-of-summer tradition!
